A Healthy Curiosity

Exploring strategies for holistic health, happiness, and personal evolution: what it takes to be well in a busy world. Blending the wisdom of Chinese Medicine, functional medicine, Ayurveda, neuroscience and psychology, you'll get practical tips you can use right away. You know that health and happiness aren’t things you can outsource. You’ve also got a full plate, you're a giver, and making the time to take care of yourself can be challenging. A Healthy Curiosity is here to support you. Host Brodie Welch, L.Ac., is an expert in Chinese Medicine and acupuncture, a holistic health coach, as well as a teacher and practitioner of qi gong, meditation, yoga, lifestyle and diet counseling who tries to walk her talk about health and mindfulness as a recovering Type-A, parent, and business owner. You'll find interviews with fellow experts in Chinese Medicine and natural health care about the conditions we treat and strategies we use clinically; simple self-care tips to help you feel calm, centered, and energized; and personal chats where we explore what gets in the way of our best intentions: perfectionism, big goals, habits and routines, chronic pain, overwork and overwhelm, boundaries, limiting beliefs — and what it takes to overcome such obstacles mindfully. While not strictly an acupuncture / Chinese Medicine podcast, it's not "not" an acupuncture podcast.

For those who regularly listen to this podcast, you’ll know that I have a genuine interest in how shaping and evolving the culture around us is key in becoming healthy individually. In today’s episode, we have a chance to hear from Millennia Ruth Lytle who is a licensed naturopathic doctor and certified nutrition specialist. Affectionately known as Dr. Millie, she has a special interest in solving health puzzles naturally and is involved in focusing these efforts in the corporate world.

Dr. Millie provides corporate stress-relief wellness programs and consults on dietary supplements with R&D divisions of companies. Today we talk about the impact a working environment can have on individual employees – their stress levels and productivity - and how that can ultimately affect a company’s bottom line. We also discuss a few other significant topics in relationship to stress relief and management including heart math and hypnosis.

“Job stress is more strongly associated with health complaints than financial problems or family problems. Statistics show that when there is less stress on the job, there is more productivity.” – Dr. Millie

On Today’s Episode of A Healthy Curiosity:

  • The coherence between mind and heart
  • How is your heart hormonal?
  • Can we change the way we perceive stress?
  • How you can apply the principles of heart math at home.
  • Recognizing what thoughts bring good feelings and true peace.
  • Understanding what is nurturing us the most.
  • Dispelling common myths and misconceptions about hypnosis.
  • What systemic changes are being made in the corporate world to relieve stress.

Key Takeaway:

  • There is a connection and coherence between the mind and emotions.
  • We can change our thinking patterns to align with our feelings.
  • Stress is all about perception – we can change the way we perceive stress, which can change our feelings about stress at any given moment.

In today’s episode, Sarica and I get a chance to swap ideas based on our mutual love for Chinese Medicine, including how the foods we eat impact our life experience. Sarica shares her thoughts on the lost art of traditional food preparation and why it’s so important. We discuss different types of foods as well as preparation methods such as soaking and fermentation.

Sarica Cernohous is a Whole-food Nutrition and Natural Lifestyle Consultant as well as a Practitioner of Japanese-style Acupuncture and Practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine Theory and Herbal Medicine. Sarica's real-life, practical knowledge of going beyond organic and healthy ingredients and reaching deeper into the largely-forgotten and yet incredibly potent health benefits of traditional food preparation offers up a “missing link” in the wellness equation.  Her warm presence, infused with her background in Traditional Chinese Medicine and interwoven with modern-day findings, makes for an engaging presentation of the simplicity of how these processes can be implemented into our everyday, busy lives.

“Our bodies are super smart…they will always allocate resources to the places that are most stressed and most important to our livelihood.” – Sarica Cernohous

On Today’s Episode of A Healthy Curiosity:

  • Why is it important to get back to traditional food preparation?
  • Modern culture has come to expect certain nutrients in our foods.
  • Bone broth – soothing, healing and incredibly easy to digest.
  • The benefits of soaking and fermentation.

  • Pre-digestion steps like soaking and fermentation can be the missing link in vitality for so many people.
  • Keep meals simple – avoid complex meals.

Robyn Openshaw helped skyrocket the whole “green smoothie” trend all the way to mainstream media and has been known as the official Green Smoothie Girl then ever since. More than green smoothies and shakes, Robyn has authored several books about health and wellness, a former psychotherapist, college professor, and a mom of four lovely children. She’s on the verge of launching her new book called “VIBE” which explores the connection between living a healthy lifestyle and vibrational frequencies. It sounds out there for a lot of people, and she gets that, but she’s confident this will change the way we view diets and fitness forever.

In today’s episode, Robyn discusses her new-found interest in vibrational frequencies and the science that surrounds the topic. She also explains how just about every living thing emits certain frequencies, that even the smallest choices can alter our own vibrations and affect our well being.

“Anyone or anything in our energy field can raise or lower our own frequencies.” – Robin Openshaw

On Today’s Episode of A Healthy Curiosity:

  • Her journey from Green Smoothie Girl to discovering the vibrations of the universe.
  • How Einstein and Tesla inspired her to write her book "VIBE"
  • What her book is all about
  • Why the healing properties of vibration and frequency are already mainstream.
  • Emotions that are high frequency.
  • How vibrations can affect human interaction and relationships
  • The vibrational frequencies of some foods
  • How we can reduce the dirty energy in our environment
  • Why people should raise their energetic vibrations

Key Takeaway:

  • Higher vibrations are associated with high frequency emotions.
  • Paying attention to the effects of micro choice can allow us to resonate a frequency 10 Hz higher.
  • Unfortunately, we're still evaluating food if it's good or bad based on calories. It's self-serving and has nothing to do with food being healthy or not.

Tzipporah Gerson-Miller is the owner of Inner Sky Therapeutics, a certified yoga therapist, and a licensed psychotherapist who specializes in cases of trauma, depression, anxiety, and chronic pain. In her practice, she uses somatic psychotherapy – an alternative treatment focused on body-centered therapy that links the mind and the body – and integrative yoga. While she does conduct group activities, her practice is more than the usual yoga class. In yoga classes, people go to relax and release stress. What Tzipporah does is more personal and customized to the individual and aims to treat the patient of something that’s bothering their mind that could be causing their physical pains.

In today’s episode, Tzipporah shares her passion for yoga, its holistic roots, and how her methods are different from typical yoga classes. She explains the importance of revisiting traumatic events and the people who could benefit the most in one of her sessions.

Beverly Meyer is a practitioner, podcaster, and blogger who, like so many of us, have struggled with her own health issues early in life. In her college years, Beverly contracted herpes and she was disappointed at what was conventionally known at the time. She sought other doctors, received natural and conservative treatment, and she was able to at least suppress its symptoms. She has since become an advocate for alternative medicine and has established herself as a household name in the Paleo world.

In today’s episode, Beverly shares her learning experience and why she had an interest to research GABA. She also explains why she calls GABA the “forgotten neurotransmitter” and what you can do to determine if you’re low in GABA and how to improve your levels.

“GABA is that neurotransmitter that's keeping things at a stable, steady pattern.” – Beverly Meyer

On Today’s Episode of A Healthy Curiosity:

  • The four main neurotransmitters in the body.
  • How seizures are linked to GABA.
  • GABA's main roles in the body.
  • Does GABA get depleted and can it be increased through our diet?
  • Why she tells her clients to remove gluten in their diet.
  • Her favorite sleep trick.
  • GABA sources she recommends.
  • What is "leaky brain"?
  • Her thoughts on seeing traditional doctors.

Key Takeaway:

  • People have to be willing to speak up and acknowledge that they deserve better doctors.
  • The problem is human life right now revolves around stress. Our rational minds are swamped with irrational events that we can't place in a rational system.
  • Every cell in your body is programed to win, to live, and to do its job perfectly. We don't have to make things happen, our job is to let things happen.

I’ve been pretty busy lately. We dropped our daughter off at her first year of college, vacationing for a week in the Orcas, and attended a friend’s wedding in Seattle. When we got back, I was busy transitioning office managers and seeing more patients than usual to make up for my absence. In between being on the road and making up for my lost clinic hours, I was considering rerunning a previous episode so I can take a little breather. Then I remembered the one question my patients ask me when I check them out: “What do you look for when you look at my tongue?” and decided to make a short episode about it.

In today’s episode, I’ll share with you what we look for when looking at your tongue, how to read the tongue, and what it can tell you when it comes to your health and internal organs. This is basically an intro to Tongue Diagnosis.

“The tongue is like a little map of the body.” – Brodie Welch, L.Ac.

On Today’s Episode of A Healthy Curiosity:

  • How Tongue diagnosis compares to what acupuncturists do
  • How accurate can diagnosis be?
  • What exactly do they look for when looking at your tongue?
  • The parts of the tongue and the organs they represent.
  • What does a normal tongue look like?
  • Colors, coats, and shape of the tongue and the illnesses and issues they indicate.
  • Tips on improving your life right now based on what you learned.

Key Takeaway:

  • Tongue scrapers are a good health investment.
  • Whatever you see in your tongue is not 100% an indicator of what's going on your body.

Randi Buckley works with women and guides them toward gently uncovering their inner truth. Her work involves pointing towards your own divinity, the kind that supports forging your personal identity. This personal identity is made up of a union of the head, heart, and intuition. One of her main specialties is helping people get better at enforcing boundaries. This is a big deal, especially for those who easily give into peer pressure and some forms of social abuse.

Randi is here with me today to discuss the concept of having boundaries and why everyone should know how to set them. She provides insight on why it’s difficult to set boundaries, how to properly enforce boundaries, and the importance of being kind to yourself at all times.

“Boundaries are an act of kindness. They are essentially giving somebody an instruction manual to get the best version of us.” – Randi Buckley

On Today’s Episode of A Healthy Curiosity:

  • How Randi decided to work with clients on enforcing boundaries?
  • Why we have the wrong notion of what a boundary really is.
  • How can you set boundaries without going overboard or being intimidating?
  • How do you cope with identity changes brought upon by setting boundaries?
  • How she helps people navigate the middle ground?
  • How to know what true kindness is.
  • Can denying someone what they want be an act of kindness?
  • The steps in enforcing boundaries.
  • The Chinese Medicine aspect involved in valuing and respecting yourself.

Key Takeaway:

  • Your boundaries are your values and action. By having them, you are taking a stand for that value in this world and shifting the world toward that value
  • People are resistant to change in other people's boundaries because they no longer know where they will stand in their life.
  • If your kindness does not include yourself, then it's incomplete.

In Episode 57 of A Healthy Curiosity, Brodie talks with Maureen Magauran, MD and Holistic Psychiatrist, about the ways we convince ourselves that we’re stuck, even when we have the power to make positive changes. Meditation allows us to tap into something greater than ourselves, which can help us see our own lives in new and different ways, allowing us to heal from grief, trauma, and everyday ups and downs.

In this episode, we explore:

  • Meditation – what it is and what it isn’t
  • How to shift your mindset
  • Discovering where you’re getting stuck
  • Holding space for someone to show them they’re cared for

Is shame keeping you from realizing your value?

In this episode, Brodie talks with Jennifer Kind, LPC, CDWF, EPC, a Psychotherapist and coach in Portland, OR who works with people cultivating more shame resilience, self-acceptance, and the ability to be kinder to themselves and others. Jen believes shame holds people back; it is not a good motivator for change. Shame breeds fear, anxiety, depression, and paralysis. It keeps us from becoming who we are; it keeps us from living our truth.

In this episode, we explore:

  • The ways shame holds us back
  • Unhealthy cultural attitudes about vulnerability
  • How there can be no courage without vulnerability
  • Ways shame can manifest in our bodies and emotions
  • Ways to build resilience against shame
  • The connection between shame and body image

Have you ever felt unlucky in love? Maybe you’ve had partners that made you feel bad about yourself or you’ve been on plenty of dates but can’t get someone to commit. Maybe you’re in a long term relationship and simply feel it could be more fulfilling.

It may be time for you to date yourself. In Episode 22 (now 55), Brodie talks with Veronica Grant, dating coach and private yoga instructor, about ways to improve our love lives, whether we’re dating casually, seeking a long-term relationship, or currently with a long-term partner.

In this episode, we explore:

  • Dating yourself: what does it mean?
  • Some common reasons people struggle to enter a relationship
  • Some common reasons people struggle to get what they want out of a relationship
  • Treating yourself the way you want to be treated
  • Deciding what you want out of your relationship
  • Setting boundaries (because boundaries are sexy!)
