Blending the wisdom of Chinese Medicine, functional medicine, Ayurveda, neuroscience and psychology, you'll get practical tips you can use right away. You know that health and happiness aren’t things you can outsource. You’ve also got a full plate, you're a giver, and making the time to take care of yourself can be challenging. A Healthy Curiosity is here to support you. Host Brodie Welch, L.Ac., is an expert in Chinese Medicine and acupuncture, a holistic health coach, as well as a teacher and practitioner of qi gong, meditation, yoga, lifestyle and diet counseling who tries to walk her talk about health and mindfulness as a recovering Type-A, parent, and business owner. You'll find interviews with fellow experts in Chinese Medicine and natural health care about the conditions we treat and strategies we use clinically; simple self-care tips to help you feel calm, centered, and energized; and personal chats where we explore what gets in the way of our best intentions: perfectionism, big goals, habits and routines, chronic pain, overwork and overwhelm, boundaries, limiting beliefs — and what it takes to overcome such obstacles mindfully. While not strictly an acupuncture / Chinese Medicine podcast, it's not "not" an acupuncture podcast.

Today we’ll be discussing the neuroscience of personal development with my guest Mary Shores. Regular listeners of A Healthy Curiosity will know that I have a passion for neuroscience, especially when it comes to how it relates to our potential of who we can become. Mary shares her insight on specific techniques and methods that can help facilitate our personal development as well as moments from her own journey that helped her become who she is today.

Mary Shores is the international bestselling author of Conscious Communications: Your Step-by-Step Guide to Harnessing the Power of Your Words to Change Your Mind, Your Choices, and Your Life. As an author, speaker, entrepreneur, and CEO, Mary Shores teaches individuals and businesses to fearlessly create their own realities by using scientific methods and practical personal development.

“Gratitude is the basis and foundation of every spiritual or religious practice that I’ve ever seen. When it comes to the neuroscience of gratitude, the benefit comes when we are actively looking in our environment for something to be grateful for” – Mary Shores

On Today’s Episode of A Healthy Curiosity:

  • What practices can help us hack our personal development through what we know about neuroscience.
  • The benefits of long-term gratitude journaling.
  • One daily task that can generate new, fresh ideas.
  • How to prevent our subconscious from sabotaging our successes.
  • Becoming who you really are – letting go of the identity that we were told we were supposed to have in favor of who we were meant to be.
  • Invoking fictional characters to represent dimensions of who we want to be.
  • How we talk to ourselves and the importance of the words that we use.
  • How we can focus on putting our energy into what we are creating and what we want to show up as.

In today’s episode, we discuss the connection between mindset and health, specifically when it comes to healthy eating and weight loss. My guest is Amy Krasner who supports women who are struggling with low energy, digestive issues and difficulty losing weight. I met Amy at a workshop where the focus was on deep self-reflection on what parts of our own stories can actually be a service to others. She shares what led her to where she is now as well as understanding how to nourish our own bodies and developing a practice of positive self-talk.

As a Holistic Nutritionist and a Natural Chef, Amy has helped hundreds of women to improve their health by understanding how to nourish their bodies. In addition to nutrition consulting, Amy supports women to create a healthier relationship with food through Eating Psychology and Intuitive Eating methodologies. She uses a unique approach of 80% mindset and 20% nutrition to help women overcome physical and emotional blocks that have held them back from success with other diet and exercise approaches.

“I see so many women who feel that they are alone in their struggle to lose or maintain weight. I want to remind them that this is a much bigger collective issue…that working with others can not only give them the support they need, but also gives them the opportunity to provide support to others.” –

On Today’s Episode of A Healthy Curiosity:

  • Tuning into and paying attention to how you as an individual react to food.
  • How we can avoid demonizing certain foods.
  • What’s important about mindset when it comes to eating?
  • The connection between behavior and our food choices.
  • Tips for those of us who may struggle with mindful eating.
  • How to move away from negative self-talk especially when it comes to food.
  • How can women develop a better sense of body image in the face of an ever-prevalent cultural messaging that seems to set a standard?
  • Listening to our intuition when it comes to overcoming cravings – especially when it comes to food that may not be so good for us…like sugar.

My guest for today’s episode is very passionate about taking the many different pieces of our health and putting them together in one complete blueprint for wellness. She makes the comparison of our overall health as a house – just like it wouldn’t be a good idea to leave one room of our house cluttered, unclean or disorganized, so it is with our health. We should be taking the time to pay attention to all aspects of our health.

Stephanie Gray, DNP, MS, ARNP, ANP-C, GNP-C, ABAAHP, FAARFM, has been working as a nurse practitioner since 2009. She completed her doctorate focusing on estrogen metabolism from the University of Iowa in 2011. Additionally, she has a Masters in Metabolic Nutritional Medicine from the University of South Florida’s Medical School. Her expertise lies within integrative, anti-aging, and functional medicine. She is arguably one of the Midwest's’ most credentialed female healthcare providers combining many certifications and trainings.

“It’s important that people know that they don’t have to go it alone when it comes to health. There are so many resources and practitioners available – they just have to get out there and find them.” – Stephanie Gray

On Today’s Episode of A Healthy Curiosity:

  • Why gut health is usually the starting point when it comes to addressing symptoms.
  • What tests should we all know about for SIBO (Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth)?
  • Is gluten sensitivity just a fad?
  • The important steps we can take to achieve hormone balance and minimize our risk.
  • Benefits of DIM supplements and when we might use it.
  • Why estrogen related cancers are on the rise and what we can do to avoid exposure.

Today we’re discussing the yin and yang of the menstrual cycle with Dr. Eric Karchmer, a fellow Chinese Medicine “geek.” We’ll hear his insight on addressing the menstrual cycle and related issues from a Chinese medicine background. We also talk about other women’s health concerns that can come up in life and how they can be addressed from a lifestyle, diet and Chinese herbal perspective.

Eric’s fascination with Chinese medicine started over 30 years ago, when he ventured to China to teach English. Before earning a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of North Carolina, Eric spent five years earning a Bachelor’s of Medicine from the renowned Beijing University of Chinese Medicine and attended Princeton for his undergraduate studies. He has published numerous scholarly articles on Chinese medicine and will finish his book manuscript, Orientalizing the Body: Postcolonial Transformations in Chinese Medicine, later this year.

“I think one of the difficulties for American women when thinking about their periods is that they’re not used to thinking about the entire body and how it relates to their menstrual cycle.” – Dr. Eric Karchmer

On Today’s Episode of A Healthy Curiosity:

  • How a menstrual cycle can be a uniquely valuable clue about what’s going on inside the body.
  • What should a normal period feel like?
  • Common diagnosis for women who are having issues with their period from a Chinese Medicine perspective.
  • Tapping into the more subtle experiences and symptoms that doesn’t always show up in lab results from your biomedical doctor or OBGYN.
  • What can we do to remedy a blood deficiency?
  • How heat and cold (foods, liquids, environments) can impact the menstrual cycle.
  • The connection between the health of our kidneys and our overall health.

Today we’re talking about taking care of our skin, but not necessarily in the traditional methods that are often discussed such as washing techniques, exfoliation, moisturizing or using creams and oils. My guest today, Dr. Keira Barr, will share her insight on how other aspects of our lives - diet, lifestyle and stress – can impact the health of our skin.

She is a dual-board certified Dermatologist and an internationally recognized author, leader, speaker and educator in her field. As the Chief Wellness Officer of Resilient Health Institute (RHI) she has integrated functional and lifestyle medicine with the traditional to redefine the delivery of skincare.

“Feeling comfortable in your own skin isn’t just about what’s on the surface…it’s also about what’s going on inside.” – Dr. Keira Barr

Chemotherapy has been described as one of the most traumatic and difficult treatments one can go through. But unfortunately, in this toxic world we live in, there’s a good chance that most of us will know someone personally who has to go through chemotherapy. Is there any way to minimize the harmful effects of this devastating treatment and possibly make it a positive experience?

My guest today is Carol Lourie, who is a Naturopath, Acupuncturist and Homeopath. After attending the National College of Naturopathic Medicine, Carol moved to California, obtained her Acupuncture license and opened the Natural Health Care and Healing Center in Berkeley. She has always been interested in the treatment of complex disease and utilizes all skills for a mind-body approach towards recovering health.

“I think that when you are undergoing care for something as complex as cancer, you need to be able to differentiate what parts of the recommended treatment are for you, when you want to seek a second opinion and how you can become the most empowered advocate for yourself.” – Carol Lourie

On Today’s Episode of A Healthy Curiosity:

  • Types of support available to those with breast or ovarian cancer.
  • A person with cancer is not a “patient”.
  • The beauty of individualizing treatment for each person.

“I really want people to realize that migraine headaches are a symptom of some type of underlying stress in your body. This stress shows up for different people in different ways. In today’s busy world, it’s easy to get distracted by all of the noise that often keeps us from our sense of purpose and clarity, preventing us from making decisions from the inside out. To truly start living from a place of alignment and aliveness, it’s crucial that we get back in touch with our intuition.

My guest today is Jessica Valor, who is an intuitive mentor and healer for busy leaders of the world who want to feel supported personally and professionally and want to turn on and use their intuition in life and business. Jessica supports entrepreneurs and organizations in connecting with their highest levels of awareness to help them craft their uniquely inspired leadership roles and dynamic infrastructure.

“I believe that all people on the planet right now are here to heal, rise, love and lead. We’re here to help the planet heal and we do that by healing individually and sharing that experience.” – Jessica Valor

On Today’s Episode of A Healthy Curiosity:

  • What is “Intuition” and how can we recognize when it is speaking to us?
  • Infusing intentional rituals to recognize and learn our own rhythms.
  • Combining spirit and strategy to create alchemy experiences.
  • Staying aligned with our biggest “Yes’s” – what we are truly committed to.
  • Why it’s so important to let go of old identities.

How does our emotional health correlate with our physical health – specifically with what we put in our mouths? How do we correct unhealthy habits without giving up the desire to feel joy or comfort that often comes through the food we eat? And how do we solve this seemingly never-ending emotional connection with sugar?

These are the questions and topics we discuss in today’s podcast with expert Megan Buer. Megan is an Emotional Code Practitioner and founder of Harmony Restored; a company focused on helping individuals heal from the stress that is at the root of their physical and emotional pain. After suffering from years with anxiety, panic disorder, chronic stress, food intolerances, adrenal fatigue, and an auto-immune disease, Megan went on a journey to health - spending over 10 years researching, experimenting, and finally figuring out all the unique tools she needed to naturally heal herself.

“If I believe something is wrong with me, then something will always be wrong with me.” – Megan Buer

On Today’s Episode of A Healthy Curiosity:

  • What is the Emotion Code?
  • Using food for emotional reasons.
  • Tuning into your own body – avoiding diet confusion.
  • Learning to trust our own inner-wisdom.
  • What is the emotional connection to sugar that many of us feel?
  • Tips for changing unhealthy eating habits.

Key Takeaway:

  • We can change or reset our mindset and emotional well being by being more aware of what we are putting into our bodies.
  • It’s okay to want to feel rewarded, joy or comfort, but it doesn’t always need to involve foods that are unhealthy for us.

In this episode of "A Healthy Curiosity,” we speak with Dr. Christina Bjorndal, an expert in the connection between mental health and food. Dr. Chris, as her patients know her, is gracious enough to share her past experiences with depression that led to attempted suicide and how those experiences led her to a new passion in life - the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual approach to mental health.

Dr. Christina Bjorndal, ND, completed her Doctorate in naturopathic medicine from the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine. She is an authority in the treatment of mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorders and eating disorders.

“It’s important to remember that there are people out there who are truly struggling and hurting. We all need to love each other a little bit more.” – Dr. Chris

On Today’s Episode of A Healthy Curiosity:

  • How the effects of antibiotics in your gut can negatively impact your brain.
  • What are the beliefs that are driving you? Are they true?
  • Wearing the mask of “Everything is okay on the outside, but I’m dying on the inside”
  • How our diet helps build proper neurotransmitters.
  • Identifying the essential nutrients that we can’t make on our own, but need to bring in through our diet.
  • The difference between just “eating healthy” and “eating healthy…for you!”
  • Healing our relationships with self-worth and beginning to love life again.

Key Takeaway:

  • The real diagnosis of a mental health issue is based on what’s going on inside – not what we might see on the outside.
  • There are 4 aspects to wellness – physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Disease can and does manifest in all aspects.
  • It’s so important to recognize and learn that we do have a choice in how we shape our thinking.

My guest in today’s podcast is Dr. Jennifer Cronin who is an author, speaker and medical expert in Lifestyle Medicine. She focuses on empowering Moms to live an extraordinary life by putting their health (physical, emotional, spiritual, financial and sexual) as a number one priority and leading by example in order to raise strong, ambitious and independent daughters.

This is a topic that I strongly relate to…not only as a Mom myself, but because I feel it is so important that we each learn how to champion ourselves and our own needs in order to truly be our best self’s to others. In today’s episode we talk about the challenges that come as we try to balance the role of a parent with the many other roles we fulfill in life, such as a business owner. Dr. Cronin shares her insight into how we can teach our children to put themselves first by watching our example.

“Your physical health is only one component of your overall health. As women and mothers, we need to focus on the other areas of our wellness wheelhouse, including emotional, spiritual, financial and sexual health” – Dr. Jennifer Cronin

On Today’s Episode of A Healthy Curiosity:

  • How does our example to our daughters contribute to the next generation of women?
  • When healthcare becomes a feminist issue.
  • How to overcome the “not-good-enough” message many of us grew up with.
  • Why is it so easy as a woman to feel unworthy or unacceptable?
  • Knowing when and being able to ask for forgiveness.
  • Self-acceptance…letting go of the judgments of others.
  • Are we starting early enough as women to think about and talk about sexual wellness?

Key Takeaway:

  • As a woman, it is easy to become the nurturer for others while putting yourself last.
  • Your physical health is only one component of your overall health.
  • Spiritual health is a balance of connecting with whatever higher source you might believe in and tuning into your inner voice (intuition).
  • It’s up to moms to put themselves first so that this idea will rub off on children in the long run.
  • All moms have wisdom and insight that we should be sharing with each other.

Calling all those who have ever felt busy, stressed or food obsessed – this podcast is for you! Today I’m speaking with Health & Lifestyle Coach and author of the award winning book, “Busy, Stressed, and Food Obsessed!” - Lisa Lewtan. She shares wonderful insight into the correlation between being busy and stressed and how it can impact our eating habits. We discuss the importance of recognizing and understanding some of the emotional triggers and habits that lead us to food for pleasure as well as the ability to work past these feelings through meditation and thought control.

Through private coaching, online courses, workshops, and retreats, Lisa helps highly successful hungry go-getters to slow down, chill-out, develop a better relationship with food and stress, look good, and feel great. She has been featured in numerous publications including The Boston Globe, The Huffington Post, MindbodyGreen, and Better After 50, and has been a speaker at companies such as Canyon Ranch and Google.

“We’re using “busyness” to hide other things about ourselves. We tend to define ourselves by the things we are doing rather than just who we are.” – Lisa Lewtan

On Today’s Episode of A Healthy Curiosity:

  • Are we wearing our “busyness” as a badge of honor?
  • Being aware of the language around the word busy.
  • Balancing the “have-tos,” the “wanna-dos” and the “shoulds.”
  • How the stress of being busy can lead to food obsession.
  • In a fight or flight situation, where do we flee to mentally?
  • Do we really know what it feels like to be biologically hungry?
  • The process and benefits of interrupting habits.
  • How does stress, worry and self-doubt relate to self-love?

Key Takeaway:

  • So many times when we think we’re hungry, we’re really not – we’re just not present with where we are.
  • Why are we so busy? Do we have to be busy? Do we want to be busy? Do we feel like we should be busy?

For those who regularly listen to this podcast, you’ll know that I have a genuine interest in how shaping and evolving the culture around us is key in becoming healthy individually. In today’s episode, we have a chance to hear from Millennia Ruth Lytle who is a licensed naturopathic doctor and certified nutrition specialist. Affectionately known as Dr. Millie, she has a special interest in solving health puzzles naturally and is involved in focusing these efforts in the corporate world.

Dr. Millie provides corporate stress-relief wellness programs and consults on dietary supplements with R&D divisions of companies. Today we talk about the impact a working environment can have on individual employees – their stress levels and productivity - and how that can ultimately affect a company’s bottom line. We also discuss a few other significant topics in relationship to stress relief and management including heart math and hypnosis.

“Job stress is more strongly associated with health complaints than financial problems or family problems. Statistics show that when there is less stress on the job, there is more productivity.” – Dr. Millie

On Today’s Episode of A Healthy Curiosity:

  • The coherence between mind and heart
  • How is your heart hormonal?
  • Can we change the way we perceive stress?
  • How you can apply the principles of heart math at home.
  • Recognizing what thoughts bring good feelings and true peace.
  • Understanding what is nurturing us the most.
  • Dispelling common myths and misconceptions about hypnosis.
  • What systemic changes are being made in the corporate world to relieve stress.

Key Takeaway:

  • There is a connection and coherence between the mind and emotions.
  • We can change our thinking patterns to align with our feelings.
  • Stress is all about perception – we can change the way we perceive stress, which can change our feelings about stress at any given moment.

In today’s episode, Sarica and I get a chance to swap ideas based on our mutual love for Chinese Medicine, including how the foods we eat impact our life experience. Sarica shares her thoughts on the lost art of traditional food preparation and why it’s so important. We discuss different types of foods as well as preparation methods such as soaking and fermentation.

Sarica Cernohous is a Whole-food Nutrition and Natural Lifestyle Consultant as well as a Practitioner of Japanese-style Acupuncture and Practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine Theory and Herbal Medicine. Sarica's real-life, practical knowledge of going beyond organic and healthy ingredients and reaching deeper into the largely-forgotten and yet incredibly potent health benefits of traditional food preparation offers up a “missing link” in the wellness equation.  Her warm presence, infused with her background in Traditional Chinese Medicine and interwoven with modern-day findings, makes for an engaging presentation of the simplicity of how these processes can be implemented into our everyday, busy lives.

“Our bodies are super smart…they will always allocate resources to the places that are most stressed and most important to our livelihood.” – Sarica Cernohous

On Today’s Episode of A Healthy Curiosity:

  • Why is it important to get back to traditional food preparation?
  • Modern culture has come to expect certain nutrients in our foods.
  • Bone broth – soothing, healing and incredibly easy to digest.
  • The benefits of soaking and fermentation.
  • How lectins can lead to digestive issues including leaky gut syndrome.
  • Looking at the energetic quality of the food we are eating.

Key Takeaways:

  • There's more to food than the micro- and macro- nutrients.
  • When digestive systems arise, going back to the basics can be the best solution.
  • Pre-digestion steps like soaking and fermentation can be the missing link in vitality for so many people.
  • Keep meals simple – avoid complex meals.

Colette Kent is an Ayurvedic Educator and the founder of Elements Natural Healing and Wellbeing who has worked in the health and fitness industry for over 10 years. She is the former owner of a fitness studio in France who, despite her efforts to achieve optimal health, she still felt unhealthy. Following her participation in a 21-day ayurvedic body cleanse program, she began feeling healthier and inspired to become an Ayurvedic educator.

Today, Colette joins me to share her journey toward optimal health and how the ayurvedic methods she practices today can impact your health and wellbeing. She also shares tips on how to navigate the seasonal transition into Autumn and the importance of aligning your eating habits with what nature is currently doing.
