A Healthy Curiosity

Exploring strategies for holistic health, happiness, and personal evolution: what it takes to be well in a busy world. Blending the wisdom of Chinese Medicine, functional medicine, Ayurveda, neuroscience and psychology, you'll get practical tips you can use right away. You know that health and happiness aren’t things you can outsource. You’ve also got a full plate, you're a giver, and making the time to take care of yourself can be challenging. A Healthy Curiosity is here to support you. Host Brodie Welch, L.Ac., is an expert in Chinese Medicine and acupuncture, a holistic health coach, as well as a teacher and practitioner of qi gong, meditation, yoga, lifestyle and diet counseling who tries to walk her talk about health and mindfulness as a recovering Type-A, parent, and business owner. You'll find interviews with fellow experts in Chinese Medicine and natural health care about the conditions we treat and strategies we use clinically; simple self-care tips to help you feel calm, centered, and energized; and personal chats where we explore what gets in the way of our best intentions: perfectionism, big goals, habits and routines, chronic pain, overwork and overwhelm, boundaries, limiting beliefs — and what it takes to overcome such obstacles mindfully. While not strictly an acupuncture / Chinese Medicine podcast, it's not "not" an acupuncture podcast.

Today’s episode is a bit of a twist and an unusual approach, in comparison to past episodes of the podcast. If you’ve listened to the podcast before, you’ll know that my episodes are based on interviews and visits that I conduct with other health experts, practitioners, and coaches. On today’s episode, the tables are being turned, and I am being interviewed by a listener of the podcast.

My guest today is Audrey Burke – she is a newer, but loyal listener of A Healthy Curiosity, and has found herself with a deep desire to help people. She is interested in pursuing a career in wellness, but isn’t quite sure which direction to go. Audrey has a unique background, with a degree in biomedical engineering and a work history including corporate work, working on farms and for non-profits, and living in Italy as an ex-pat. She is passionate about yoga, but has found herself fascinated by Ayurveda, acupuncture, and massage school, among other things.

Audrey takes the lead with questions as I share my career and wellness journey – a journey that has been anything but linear, but has led me to the beautiful combination of skills, techniques, and practices I love sharing with my clients today.

“The beautiful thing about being in the health field or the wellness field is that every ounce of work you do on yourself, is going to benefit the other people in your life. Your own personal lessons become the things you are skillful at sharing with your patients.” – Brodie Welch

I recently had the pleasure of being a guest on her podcast and I’m so excited to have Shanna Ekedal with us today. Shanna is a frequency alchemist and personal coach dedicated to helping people have the body and life they want. She’s a trailblazer in mind-body spirit wellness and host of Soul Frequency Podcast. She’s been where many of us have been before, a little lost and focused on finding perfection. That was until she had a profound experience that forced her to wake up and change her life and now she helps others do the same.

Today she helps decipher whether it’s our intuition or fear telling us to do something. Also, how do we make small changes towards a new life. We often take on the energy of those around us, Shanna will help us focus on getting back to who we are and putting focus on where it needs to be.

“You need the love around you. Find that support system that is going to love you and guide you through the process because that is everything it gives you the courage to make the steps that you want to make. “

One of our favorite guests on A Healthy Curiosity is back with us on today’s episode. Alexx Stuart is an educator and change agent who founded Low Tox Life in 2010 after seeing the lack of transparency in our food system, personal care and cleaning products. She joins me today to talk about creating healthier homes and families, living a life with fewer toxins, and the environmental impacts of the products and foods we use.

Join in and learn with me as Alexx explains some useful and practical information to help us bring our lives into greater alignment with our values and goals, from both a personal and a planetary perspective. As we talk about navigating healthy living and becoming more conscious of what we bring into our lives, we also acknowledge that there are ways to change and adopt new habits without feeling like a failure and while still allowing yourself to enjoy your life and relationships.

“It’s not about striving for some sort of perfection… it is about striving to become more and more conscious of the choices that we make and how they affect us and the planet we live on. We cannot feel guilty about what we didn’t know yesterday. Instead, feel excited about what you’re going to change from today.” - Alexx Stuart

Today we’re talking about toxicity, resilience, and how to find greater health in a toxic world. We dive into some basic information about the MTHFR gene – what it is and what we should know about it, as well as genetic mutation, and what we can do about it. My guest is Dr. Kendra Becker-Musante.

Dr. Becker-Musante is an Integrative Physician, who has practiced in Connecticut for over a decade. She specializes in treatment for the “4 A’s,” Asthma, Autism, Allergies, and Eczema. She has a passion for exploring environmental toxins in our lives and treatment for the 4 A’s, among other effects and challenges resulting from toxicity and other environmental and genetic factors. She is the author of “A Delicious Way to Heal the Gut” and is planning for a second book to be published in early 2018.

Learn how to heal your body from the inside, and begin your journey of healing and resilience, starting with your cells. Learn how food can be your medicine or your poison and that your genes do not define you, but certainly help guide the way of your healing.” – Dr. Kendra Becker-Musante
