A Healthy Curiosity

Exploring strategies for holistic health, happiness, and personal evolution: what it takes to be well in a busy world. Blending the wisdom of Chinese Medicine, functional medicine, Ayurveda, neuroscience and psychology, you'll get practical tips you can use right away. You know that health and happiness aren’t things you can outsource. You’ve also got a full plate, you're a giver, and making the time to take care of yourself can be challenging. A Healthy Curiosity is here to support you. Host Brodie Welch, L.Ac., is an expert in Chinese Medicine and acupuncture, a holistic health coach, as well as a teacher and practitioner of qi gong, meditation, yoga, lifestyle and diet counseling who tries to walk her talk about health and mindfulness as a recovering Type-A, parent, and business owner. You'll find interviews with fellow experts in Chinese Medicine and natural health care about the conditions we treat and strategies we use clinically; simple self-care tips to help you feel calm, centered, and energized; and personal chats where we explore what gets in the way of our best intentions: perfectionism, big goals, habits and routines, chronic pain, overwork and overwhelm, boundaries, limiting beliefs — and what it takes to overcome such obstacles mindfully. While not strictly an acupuncture / Chinese Medicine podcast, it's not "not" an acupuncture podcast.

Being successful does not necessarily bring happiness. For my guest Dr. Andrea Pennington, it did the exact opposite: it burned her out, and stifled her spark to the point of deep depression, and cut her off from herself in profound ways. Thankfully, she found her way back.

When I stumbled across this fellow Chinese Medicine and qi gong practitioner's work, and learned we shared a passion for blending paradigms, biohacking and evangelizing self-love, I immediately reached out to get this multi-passionate powerhouse on the show. We talk about:

  • falling into the "success trap:" how getting everything she wanted made her miserable
  • how a profound spiritual experience rescued her from a deep depression
  • why self-awareness is a pre-requisite for self-love
  • the connection between happiness and authentic self-expression
  • how qi gong helped her connect to self-love
  • how identifying as consciousness itself fosters self-compassion

Dr. Andrea Pennington is an integrative physician, acupuncturist, meditation teacher and #1 international bestselling author of several books on resilience, mindfulness and self-love. Dr. Andrea’s extensive study of medical nutrition, positive psychology and longevity biohacking led her to create a holistic media platform, In8Vitality, blending ancient wisdom and modern science for enhanced vitality and life mastery.

As Co-founder of the #RealSelfLove Movement Andrea speaks globally to reduce the stigma of mental illness and to support people on their journey to authentic living Andrea is also a highly acclaimed TEDx speaker.  Dr. Andrea has shared her candid insights on resilience on the Oprah Winfrey Show, the Dr. Oz Show, CNN, the Today Show, LUXE-TV, Thrive Global and HuffingtonPost and as a news anchor for Discovery Health Channel.

  • endometriosis, vulvodynia and what we can do about them
  • how the awareness of trauma might actually be doing women a disservice when it comes to a pelvic pain diagnosis
  • how Chinese Medicine can help
  • building a holistic-minded treatment team for pelvic pain

Deconstructing Pain

with Dr. Kevin Cuccaro

Dealing with pain can be frustrating and, well...painful. If you don't suffer from a persistent pain, you know someone who does. Today we talk about:

  • how pain is constructed -- and how we might deconstruct it
  • the real purpose of pain
  • the "pain triangle"
  • why pain persists even if the "problem" is fixed

Dr. Kevin Cuccaro, D. O.  is a physician, consultant and expert on pain. As a specialist in chronic pain, he is changing how society understands and treats the physical and emotional sides to pain. Dr. Cuccaro has a private practice in Philomath, OR and currently serves on the Oregon Pain Management Commission as well as the Oregon Health Authority Health Evidence Review Committee’s Chronic Pain Task Force.
